We had SO much fun on our Community Helpers Field Trip today! We walked around Belgrade and visited the following places to learn more about our community: 1. Police Station: Officer John and Officer Jarrod explained their very important jobs and showed us their "interview" rooms, taught us about their gear, and Officer John even showed us his car and let us see how the lights and sirens work. I think our kiddo's could have stayed here all day! 2. Post Office: We brought letters to our parents to the post office today to mail. (Special thanks to Joni for the stamps and envelopes!) They took us on a tour of the back sorting facility, taught us about postage and mailing services, explained a delivery worker's gear and job duties, and showed the children how to drop their letters in the mail. You should see your letters arrive at home Thursday or Friday! 3. Bank: We visited the credit union for our banking tour, and they were so welcoming (as you can see in the pictures below!). They closed off the teller lanes, took us behind the counters, and let the children send notes to each other in the tubes. The children LOVED seeing their friends outside through the cameras and getting to talk through the teller microphones. Next, we were able to go back where the vault is and see how money is kept safe, as well as learn how they use the coin counting machine and shredder. Children will be bringing their goodie bags and piggie banks from the bank home tomorrow! 4. Library: Rebekah, the children's librarian, hosted our group and taught us how library membership works, the duties of the different library staff members, and then guided us through the library's departments and offices. She read us a great book about community helpers upstairs. 5. Fire Station: We ended our tour at the fire station. The fire fighters gave us a great tour of their regular truck, ladder truck, grass fire truck, and the ambulance, along with demonstrating the use of all the special tools and compartments on board. One fireman demonstrated all the gear needed before entering a building on fire, and showed the children that there was nothing to be afraid of if they ever encountered a fire fighter in action. The children loved it. We ended our morning with lunch at the park before returning back to school for early release. Thank you so much to all the volunteers who were able to come and make this morning so much fun! I hope you enjoy some of the moments I was able to collect today.
