For the past two weeks, we have studied pandas. We read informational texts about pandas, checked in on our "panda friend" at the San Diego Zoo on their Panda Cam every day, watched videos about pandas, and searched for answers to any remaining questions about pandas on the internet together. During this shared research time, we kept taking notes and stored them in our writing folders.
This week, students worked to complete their final writing portions about pandas in teams for each topic (life cycle, habitat, food, and physical features). Then we "jigsawed" and made new groups with one student from each topic team and made our presentation posters! Next week, we will take our learning a step further and work in teams to research, write about, and present on different animals per team! I can't wait to see what topics they choose. We can't wait to keep learning how to research answers to our questions, summarize information in our own words, and teach others about our topics. :) As you all know, the little bookworms in our class devour books at an amazing rate, and their reading growth has been incredible thanks to access to engaging texts. However, it is a budgetary challenge to continue to stock our class library with texts of interest and quality, especially as they are flying through their reading levels!
Therefore, I have submitted my very first Donors Choose project to receive new reading material for second grade next year! I selected several of the book series that have been popular lately with our class, as well as with some of our current second grade classes. :) If you know anyone who might be interested in donating to our classroom library, please pass this message along to them! Family, friends, Facebook, you name it! **For the first 7 days of fundraising, all donations up to $50 will be doubled if you add the code "RIPPLE" at checkout. This sponsorship match ends on April 23rd. (We have until August to finish raising the total amount, though.) Here's the link: https://www.donorschoose.org/project/readers-are-leaders-in-2nd-grade/3133831/ Thank you for passing this along to anyone interested, and for your continual support of our classroom. Wish us luck! :) Thanks again, Cate |
